as PLANET WAVES’ eric francis puts it, every astrologer has their personal poster child for each sign, and Lennon is his Libra. Good choice; but being the animal lovin slut that i am, alicia silverstone is mine. she is the epitome of charm and grace, which is libra’s MO. after Clueless, where did the cute little blondette go? she disappeared, into fatdom. i thought for sure she was britney spears done. but she wasn’t going down that easily! to my surprise, the very much clued-in clueless star turned her career and life around. she claims that was due to one thing and one thing alone: vegetarianism.

ANIMALS MATTER TO ME: sign the petition
While I applaud Ms. Silverstone for speaking up and trying to make a positive contribution to the vegetarian movement, I find (and have long found) PETA’s nudity campaigns disturbing. In order to influence people to become vegetarian out of ethical concern rather than faddish interest in celebrity (my first issue with PETA’s ads), you have to eliminate the view of animals as commodities and stop objectifying them as bodies. By emphasizing beautiful women (Pam Anderson, Dominique Swain, Alicia Silverstone) they are reinforcing the same kind of objectification on us and usig sex to sell an behavior, a way of thinking about the world. At its heart, that’s an effort doomed to fail.

excellent point marleigh… i had not thought of that. but keep in mind, peta is a shock value group. do i agree with all of their stands? no. even though this might be an effort doomed to fail, at least it makes a few people think about an issue they normally would not have.
