i’ll smell to that

perfume_cocktail1.gifit’s nothing hugely new, but the new york times picked it up so now it’s hot. i’m referencing liquor parfums here. actually, the urge to smell like a bar started a few years back with DEMETER’s happy hour line with scents named gin & tonic and sex on the beach. then philosophy did body washes in margarita, daquiri and mimosa. last year urban decay did cocktail body powder, shot’s o’ gloss & body balm. and last season victoria’s secret had appletini body cream. the drugstore chains always sell out of their cocktail bubble baths as soon as they get them in. and i just saw chardonnay & Bordeaux, candles at this year’s gift fair. TLM blogged about some KLEAN martini body scrub a while back. urban monarch just told us about wine (ahem, grape) based skin cream . check out caudalie and davi for wine-based creams as well. and so it appears that sometimes fashion does trickle down and not up! the big guys have decided they finally wanna put their cocktails on too. yes, the alchemist’s bar has hit paydirt… couture fragrance is spraying drinks. look for high end parfums containing everything from saki & champagne (voluspa), to cognac (thierry mugler) to wine flavored creams (d’vine) to tequila (jo malone) to rum (nelli rodi) to sake (japan SK-11) to l’artisan parfumeur for ananas fizz & mimosa for moi. if you’re in napa-lucky you-visit the delluva vinotherapy day spa, for a wine flavored sensory experience. it does leave one wondering though, where’s the beer?

and in case you’re wondering, the nose is ruled by scorpio… who will sniff exactly which perfume you’re wearing!

  1. A few years back, Bombay Sapphire had a fragrance designed for them by a big name fragrance designer, and they had a contest for which 50 lucky people (or however many) would win a bottle of the resulting cologne. The website was really oddly built, so I figured no one would be able to submit a ticket — and sure enough, I won a bottle.

If you don’t know the cologne is gin-scented, it smells citrusy and light. If you think “gin,” then it smells like a very dry martini. I love it, but there is the very real hazard of putting it on at 8am and feeling a strong impulse to have a cocktail.

I have a couple of those Demeter perfumes too, but they’re too sugary to wear.
